Costello applauds choice of Jane Garvey to oversee NATCA/FAA negotiations
Thursday, 30 April 2009 17:56
WASHINGTON - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL), Chairman of the House Aviation Subcommittee, today applauded the choice of former FAA Administrator Jane Garvey to oversee the mediation process between the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on a new contract. Work rules were imposed on the union in 2006 when the FAA declared negotiations to be at an impasse.

"Jane Garvey is a tremendous choice and I commend her for taking on this important role, as well as President Obama and Secretary LaHood for moving quickly on this issue," said Costello. "Getting a new controller contract in place is the most important aviation issue the administration needs to address. The current work rules have led to a wave of controller retirements and low morale. Safety is always our top priority, and as we have seen again recently, there is no substitute for experienced controllers. I stand ready to assist this process in any way necessary."

Inspector General Staffing Report Validates NATCA'S Concerns
Monday, 27 April 2009 22:30
WASHINGTON - A report released today by the Department of Transportation Inspector General on the critical air traffic controller staffing issues at three major California FAA facilities vindicates what the National Air Traffic Controllers Association has long said about the safety concerns that come from a loss of experienced controllers and the vast amount of work now needed by the FAA to dig out from the deep hole caused by FAA labor, staffing and "run it like a business" failures during the Bush Administration.

After asking a number of pilots to take my ATC survey and examining the results, a pattern has emerged that do not find surprising. The vast majority of pilots give our Air Traffic Controllers high marks, with 77.7% assigning a grade of A- or better. In fact, nobody that took the survey gave ATC a grade lower than a B.

Obama picks Randy Babbitt for FAA chief
Friday, 27 March 2009 15:23
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama will nominate former pilots' union chief Randy Babbitt to head the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the White House said on Friday.

Babbitt, a consultant who led the Air Line Pilots Association in the 1990s, would become the top safety regulator of passenger and cargo airlines.

He would also be responsible for management of the sprawling U.S. air traffic control network.

The FAA is responsible for coordinating air space for more than 30,000 commercial flights per day.
